The New York State Thruway Authority is seeking bids to rehabilitate the historic Flight of Five Locks 67-71 on the Erie Canal in Lockport, NY.

Authorities have appropriated a total of $3.2 million for the lock rehabilitation, as well as design and construction management, hydraulics and water management, and site access.

The rehabilitation project, estimated at $3.2 million, is designed to restore the locks to their original 1862 condition and make them fully functional.

Bids are due July 10.

Scope of Work

The project mission involves “the stabilization and restoration of the Flight of Five Locks to a fully functioning Flight of Locks, representative of their 1862 condition,” according to William Miles, Director of Civil Works for Bergmann Associates.

The renovation of the locks themselves will require a minor amount of coating application for handrailing, but much of the work involves performing repairs to wooden and concrete surfaces.

About the Structure

The locks opened October 25, 1862. When the restoration is complete, the Lockport Locks Heritage District will be the only location in the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor where historic manual and current electrical operation of canal lock technology can be viewed side by side.

Two much larger locks have replaced the south "flight of five." The north "flight of five" chambers (pictured) remain.

The restored Flight of Five is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. The attraction will join the popular Lockport Locks and Erie Canal Cruises; the Lockport Cave and Underground Boat Ride attractions; and the Lockport Visitor’s Center, home of the Erie Canal Discovery Center.
