The Pennsylvania State Department of Transportation has awarded a contract in the amount of $3,960,160 for cleaning and coating various existing bridge structures in Cumru, Muhlenberg, Robeson, Ruscombmanor and Washington Townships in Berks County.

The contract was awarded to Lobar Site Development of Dillsburg, Pennsylvania.
Lobar Site Development was the lowest of three apparent bidders. Additional bids included Road-Con Inc. (West Chester, Pennsylvania), in the amount of $4,121,719.30; and J.D. Eckman, Inc. (Atglen, Pennsylvania), in the amount of $9,087,851.50.
The project includes lump sum items for cleaning bridges. The contractor will also oversee zone painting, concrete and substructure repairs, scarification, waterproofing and miscellaneous site work.

Concrete surfaces will require a coating system of penetrating sealers and installation of waterproofing membrane. Steel rail barrier surfaces which have been damaged and exposed will be coated with standard NEPCOAT B including a zinc-epoxy primer and urethane-aliphatic urethane topcoat.
Containment according to SSPC-Guide 6 and waste disposal according to Guide 7 are required. Certifications to SSPC-QP 1, QP 2 and QP 3 are also required.
Surface preparation will involve cleaning in accordance with standards for Near-White Metal Blast Cleaning (SSPC-SP 10/NACE No. 2). Concrete surfaces will require preparation by scarification and high-pressure water jetting.
Approved manufacturers include Ameron (PPG), Carboline, Wasser, Sherwin-Williams, International Paint, BASF, Euclid, Crafco, W.R. Meadows, Polyguard Products, Propex, Chase, Right Pointe, Soprema and TenCate Geosynthetics.
