Contract Awarded for IL Bridge Cleaning

The Illinois State Department of Transportation has awarded a contract in the amount of $1,739,800 for cleaning and painting of 12 existing bridge structures in Henry, Knox, Peoria, Tazewell and Woodford Counties.

The contract was awarded to Eagle Painting & Maintenance Company, Inc., of Lansing, Illinois.

Eagle Painting & Maintenance was the lowest of four apparent bidders. Additional bids included:

  • Three Star Painting, Inc. of Merrillville, Indiana, in the amount of $1,750,000;
  • Era-Valdivia Contractors, Inc. of Chicago in the amount of $2,282,864; and
  • Civil Coatings and Construction, Inc. of Valparaiso, Indiana, in the amount of $3,243,368.

The Illinois State Department of Transportation has awarded a contract in the amount of $1,739,800 for cleaning and painting of 12 existing bridge structures in Henry, Knox, Peoria, Tazewell and Woodford Counties.

The project involves cleaning and coating existing steel structures along County Highway 100, Interstate 74, Interstate 80, Township Road 21, Airport Road, US-24 Eastbound and Westbound, McCluggage Road, Illinois Route 117, County Highway 1650 and Route 317.

The work will include the application of six coating systems. System 1 consists of an organic zinc-rich primer, epoxy intermediate and urethane finish on bare steel surfaces. System 2 involves a three-coat application of epoxy penetrating sealer, epoxy mastic and aliphatic urethane on steel surfaces with an existing paint system.

System 3 involves a three-coat application of epoxy mastic and waterborne latex on bare steel surfaces. System 4 will consist of epoxy penetrating sealer, aluminum epoxy mastic and waterborne latex to overcoat specified steel surfaces.

System 5 involves a three-coat application of zinc-rich primer and moisture cure urethane on specified bare metal surfaces. System 6 involves a three-coat application of moisture cure urethane and penetrating sealer on specified steel surfaces with an existing coating system.

Surfaces will require preparation in accordance with standards for Solvent Cleaning (SSPC-SP 1), Hand Tool Cleaning (SSPC-SP 2), Power Tool Cleaning (SSPC-SP 3), Near-White Metal Blast Cleaning (SSPC-SP 10/NACE No. 2), Commercial Grade Power Tool Cleaning (SSPC-SP 15), Brush-Off Blast Cleaning of Non-Ferrous Metal (SSPC-SP 16) and Low-Pressure Water Cleaning (SSPC-SP WJ-4).

The project involves cleaning and coating existing steel structures along County Highway 100, Interstate 74, Interstate 80, Township Road 21, Airport Road, US-24 Eastbound and Westbound, McCluggage Road, Illinois Route 117, County Highway 1650 and Route 317.

Abrasives must meet requirements for SSPC-AB 1 and AB 3.

The contractor will also oversee containment and disposal of lead-based materials. Certifications for SSPC-QP 1 and QP 2 are required.

Owner-approved manufacturers for this project include Carboline and Sherwin-Williams.
