Contractors Needed for IL Bridge Painting, Repairs

The Illinois Department of Transportation is soliciting bids for painting and repairs to one bridge structure on IL-4 over US-40, just west of St. Jacob, Illinois.

The submittal date for this project is March 10.

Project Preview

The project involves cleaning and painting the existing steel bridge structure. The contract includes a lump sum item for field thermal spraying/metalizing structural steel, and containment and disposal of lead paint cleaning residue.

Structural steel will receive three coating systems. System 1 is a single-coat system consisting of a full clear aliphatic urethane coat applied to all metallized surfaces. System 2 is a three-coat system consisting of a full epoxy penetrating sealer coat and two full waterborne latex coats. System 3 is a three-coat system consisting of a full epoxy penetrating sealer coat, a full epoxy intermediate coat and a full urethane finish coat.

Surfaces will require preparation in accordance with standards for Solvent Cleaning (SSPC-SP 1), Power Tool Cleaning (SSPC-SP 3), Brush-Off Blast Cleaning (SSPC-SP 7/NACE No. 4), Near-White Metal Blast Cleaning (SSPC-SP 10/NACE No. 2), Bare Metal Power Tool Cleaning (SSPC-SP 11), and Brush-Off Blast Cleaning of Coated and Uncoated Galvanized Steel, Stainless Steels and Non-Ferrous Metals (SSPC-SP 16).

Contractors must provide certification that abrasives meet standards for SSPC-AB 1 and AB 3. Certifications for SSPC-QP 1 and QP 2 are also required.

Owner-approved manufacturers include Carboline, PPG Paints and Sherwin-Williams.
