The Maine Turnpike Authority is soliciting bids for the cleaning and coating of three existing bridge underpass structures along Shaker Road, Weymouth Road and Bennet Road in Portland, South Portland and Cumberland County. The submittal date for this project is June 13.
The project involves cleaning and painting approximately 35,300 square feet of structural steel, along with associated metal work and miscellaneous repairs.
Structural steel will receive a three-coat NEPCOAT A or B paint system, consisting of an organic or inorganic zinc-rich primer, epoxy intermediate and polyurethane finish.
Surfaces may be prepared in accordance with standards for Near-White Metal Blast Cleaning (SSPC-SP 10/NACE No. 2), Standards for Solvent Cleaning (SSPC-SP 1) Commercial Blast Cleaning (SSPC-SP 6/NACE No. 3) and Brush-Off Blast Cleaning (SSPC-SP 7/NACE No. 4).

Certifications for SSPC-QP 1 and QP 2 are required. Abrasive blast media must meet requirements for SSPC-AB 1 and AB 2 and/or AB 3.
Owner-approved manufacturers for this project include Carboline, PPG Paints, Sherwin-Williams and Wasser.
Recent Project Award
The Indiana Department of Transportation recently awarded a $178,504 contract to Eagle Painting & Maintenance Company, Inc. (Lansing, Illinois) for cleaning, coating and repairs to an existing bridge structure carrying State Route 39 over Smart Ditch near Indianapolis.
The project is scheduled to include the standard INDOT three-coat system of zinc-rich primer, epoxy intermediate, and urethane finish on structural steel. This system is subject to change depending on individual project requirements.
Containment according to SSPC-Guide 6 is required: Class 3 for zinc-primed existing systems and Class 2 for lead-primed existing systems. SSPC-QP 1, QP 2, and QP 3 certification is required.
The approved manufacturers for this project include Carboline, International Paint, PPG and Sherwin-Williams.
