The Oregon Department of Transportation has awarded a contract in the amount of $2,342,995 for the coating of the Yaquina Bay Bridge in Newport, Oregon, to Certified Coatings Company, of Fairfield, California.
The project bid Oct. 11.
Scope of Work:
This project involves coating of the Yaquina Bay Bridge, spanning 3,223 feet over Yaquina Bay. The bridge was opened to the public in September 1936, and was constructed by Gilpin Construction Company of Portland.

The Oregon Department of Transportation has awarded a contract in the amount of $2,342,995 for the coating of the Yaquina Bay Bridge in Newport, Oregon, to Certified Coatings Company, of Fairfield, California.

The project includes lump sum items for surface preparation and coating application. The steel will be abrasive blast-cleaned according to Near-White standards (SSPC-SP 10 or NACE No. 2) with the blast-cleaned surfaces closely approximating Pictorial Standard SP 10 of SSPC-Vis 1, or cleaned to Very Thorough Waterjet standards (SSPC-SP WJ-2) with the appearance of the water-jetted surfaces to closely approximate Pictorial Standard WJ-2 of SSPC-Vis 4. The steel will then be coated with a three-coat organic zinc system. The owner-approved manufacturers are Carboline, Sherwin-Williams and Wasser. A coating system warranty and supplemental warranty performance bond in the sum of $1,500,000 is required.
The project includes preparation and coating of the existing steel floor system on both deck arch spans No. 1 and No. 3. The through-arch span No. 2 will not receive coating.
The project includes Commercial Power Tool Cleaning (SSPC-SP 15) and application of primer to rivets and bolts to be replaced.
Existing coatings contain lead and chromate. Containment and waste disposal to SSPC Guide 7 is required. Soluble salt testing and removal is also required.
