The Texas State Preservation Board is seeking contractors for the interior painting of offices on an as-needed basis for the Texas State Capitol and Capitol Extension buildings, located in Austin, Texas.
Bids are due Feb. 23.
Scope of the Coating Work
The awarded contractor will be required to supply their own tools and supplies, as well as drop cloths for the protection of historic materials from dust and debris.

The Texas State Preservation Board is seeking contractors for the interior painting of offices on an as-needed basis for the Texas State Capitol and Capitol Extension buildings, located in Austin, Texas.

The contractor is required to use only advanced alkyd coating systems when applying coatings in the Capitol. In areas where historic plaster shows signs of peeling, the contractor must scrape, fill any holes and apply acrylic caulking where necessary in walls and woodwork. Wet sanding and priming will also be required to any areas that receive scraping and fillings. When completing coatings work in the Capitol Extension, the contractor is required to use only acrylic applications.
All Capitol Extension offices that will be receiving new carpet will be coated late February through April 1. Additional offices may be added to this group pending availability. The Capitol and Capitol Extension office make-ready coating will take place between July 1 and Dec. 8.
Owner-specified brands include Glidden and Zinsser.
About the Texas State Capitol Building
Originally only a log cabin with three rooms, the Republic of Texas established Austin as its capital in 1839. The first limestone Capitol wasn’t constructed until 1853 and was referred to as an “architectural monstrosity” for its lack of refinement and detail.
On Nov. 9, 1881 the structure caught fire, with plans for the new building barely scathed. In 1882, contractors began rebuilding the Capitol out of granite and it was officially reopened in May 1888. The Capitol was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and declared a National Historic Landmark in 1986.
