Laboratory Technician

This position has the primary responsibility of supporting the development of colorants for the architectural coatings market. The position involves work within an R&D team to develop colorant formulations for architectural paints. Colorants are pigment dispersions that are added to white paint to create the colored paint that consumers purchase at stores such as Lowes and Home Depot. When a customer buys a gallon of paint, store employees dispense predetermined amounts of colorant into a non-colored gallon of base paint, and then mix it in the paint shaker to make paint with the desired color. The work does not involve synthesis, but rather formulation chemistry.
Chemicals used to make architectural paint are not hazardous.
Responsibilities:
- Responsibilities include preparing colorant formulations and performing applications tests in the lab to measure colorant performance in a paint.
- Work with Research Scientists and Lab Technicians to prepare and test colorant formulations for the architectural coatings market.
- Complete laboratory projects to support Research & Development of colorants.
Perform maintenance and calibration activities required to maintain ISO compliance.
- Develop the necessary knowledge with the equipment and procedures to provide expertise to internal and external customers.
- Serve within a laboratory team in such activities as equipment repairs, including interfacing with manufacturers, contractors and site facilities.
- Assist other technicians in the completion of development projects as necessary.
- Generate ideas that improve the safety, efficiency and overall effectiveness of the laboratory and its team.
Qualifications:
· Experience in preparation and applications testing of colorant formulations or architectural coatings is a plus.
· Must have the highest standards of integrity, accuracy and attention to detail.
· Must be able to operate projects with a high sense of urgency.
· Must be able to work comfortably in a team environment and also effectively on individual efforts.
· Must have basic computer skills and be comfortable with email, MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint.
· Must be flexible and capable of adapting to priority changes on a daily basis.
· Must possess good oral and written communication skills.
· Must have a strong work ethic and be self-motivated and able to operate with minimum supervision.

Education Required: High School diploma is required with 2 years practical laboratory experience in a chemical related field, or a Bachelors or Associates degree with some practical laboratory experience (including laboratory courses taken while obtaining a college degree) in a chemical related field. A BS degree in Chemistry or another science and technology related field is preferred.
Work Schedule: M-F; 5 days/week, 8 hours/day, 7:30 AM-4:00 PM or 8:00 AM-4:30 PM with half hour lunch break.
Length of Assignment: Contract
Pay Rate: $17.00 – 18.00/hr
