CONSTRUCTION SERVICES PRACTICE
Michael Baker International’s construction technician staff work on active projects in over 40 countries on five continents. Services are provided for a broad range of projects and capabilities, including highways, airports, bridges, rail and transit systems, government and commercial facilities, water and wastewater infrastructure, oil and gas infrastructure, and commercial/urban development.

DESCRIPTION
This is a National Association of Corrosion Engineers – Coating Inspector Program - Level 1 (NACE CIP Level 1) certified technical or supervisory level of work performing a variety of construction support tasks. CIP Level 1 capabilities covers the technical and practical inspection of coating inspection work. Potential candidates should be prepared to perform basic coating inspections using non-destructive techniques and instrumentation, have knowledge and application of coating materials, along with techniques for surface preparation.

Employees in some positionsin this classification do not supervise, but may serveas lead workers. The employee is expected to give guidance and assistance to less experienced employees and may supervise a project, crew or unit.

Work is performed under the general supervision of an engineer, surveyor, or higher level technical employee.Work conditions vary depending on assignments and are performed in the office or in the field during survey and inspection assignments with exposure to varying weather conditions and rough terrain and requirements for walking, standing, bending; may require working in close proximity with traffic on Maryland highways; requireshand/eye coordination in the efficient operation of computers and other office machines, surveyequipment and the like. Employees in this classification may be required to work various shifts and on weekends depending on assignment. Employees in some positions in this classification may be required to travel within the state of MD and be available for work in any part of the State, subject to change of assignment, as work requires.

Employees in this classification will be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employeesassigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland. Applicants may be subject to a background check which may impact employment. A CDL license may be required for some positions.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) certification is required for this position.
  • Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • Specific knowledge and capabilities should include: fundamentals such as properties of a coating, coating classification and modes of protection; recognize coating types and curing mechanisms; recall coating specifications including service environments and coating life cycle; differentiate surface preparation equipment, methods, and standards for abrasive blasting, solvent cleaning, and power and manual tool cleaning; differentiate coating application by type, including brush, roller, mitt, and conventional and airless spray.
  • Have the ability to demonstrate inspection procedures including: describing the role of the inspector –as it applies to safety, ethics, conflict prevention, and decision making; testing for environmental or ambient conditions and nonvisible contaminants; utilize non-destructive test instruments such as wet-film and dry-film thickness gauges and low and high voltage holiday detectors; measurement of surface profiles using replica tape and anvil micrometers, surface profile comparators, and digital surface profile gauges; identifying quality control issues, recognizing design and fabrication defects and coating failure modes; utilize Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and product technical data sheets; and demonstrate the purpose and content of Logbook and report documentation.
  • To be successful, you’ll need to be bright, organized, and determined; you’ll also need to be able to build relationships with a wide variety of people. You will need the ability to multitask and prioritize competing project obligations.
  • Excellent English language skills, written and verbal, are essential to long term success in this role.
  • You’ll need to be able to quickly get up to speed on our policy, procedures and relevant software while acquiring an understanding of the company’s service offerings, and the client’s standards and procedures relevant to your projects.
  • Naturally, you’ll need computer skills (Microsoft Office) and knowledge of CADD using MicroStation.
