The Indiana Department of Transportation has awarded a contract in the amount of $44,811,000 for bridge painting and concrete pavement restoration at various sites in Marion County.
Project Award
The contract was awarded to Milestone Construction Co. of Columbus, Ohio. Milestone was reportedly the lowest of two apparent bidders. The additional bid was submitted by Rieth Riley Construction (Goshen, Indiana) in the amount of $44,971,885.41.
The project involves painting an existing set of two structures carrying I-465 north and south over CSX Railroad just north of US 36, as well as concrete pavement restoration on various sites along I-465.
The contract includes lump sum items for cleaning and coating steel bridges, jacking and supporting structural steel, as well as the disposal of hazardous waste. The project also requires 14,705 square feet of bridge deck patching with polyester polymer concrete and 11,241 square feet of additional polymeric overlay patching.

Structural steel surfaces will reportedly require coating in accordance with the INDOT standard inorganic zinc-epoxy-polyurethane system. This system is subject to change according to project requirements.
Containment according to SSPC-Guide 6 is required; Class 3 for zinc-primed existing systems and Class 2 for lead-primed existing systems. SSPC-QP 1, QP 2 and QP 3 certifications are required. SSPC-QP 2 certification will be required if the existing structure was constructed before 1995.
The contractor will also oversee paving, bridge joint nosing and expansion joints, piping and drainage, and miscellaneous site work.
The owner-approved manufacturers for this project include Carboline, International Paint, PPG Paints and Sherwin-Williams.
