Painting Contract Awarded for IL Bridges

The Illinois Department of Transportation has awarded a contract in the amount of $1,109,543.99 for cleaning and coating three existing structures along Interstate 55 near Chenoa and Pontiac, Illinois.

The contract was awarded to Venus Painting Co., of Valparaiso, Indiana.

Venus Painting was the lowest of four apparent bidders. Additional bids included Era-Valdivia Contractors, Inc. (Chicago) in the amount of $1,127,604; Three Star Painting, Inc. (Merrillville, Indiana) for $1,729,387; and Civil Coatings (Valparaiso, Indiana) for $1,774,296.56.

The project also reportedly involves cleaning and painting structural steel components of three existing bridge structures.

The Illinois Department of Transportation has awarded a contract in the amount of $1,109,543.99 for cleaning and coating three existing structures along Interstate 55 near Chenoa and Pontiac, Illinois.

Steel surfaces will receive an application of one of the following paint systems as specified:

  • A three-coat system of organic zinc-rich primer, epoxy intermediate and urethane finish;
  • A three-coat system of epoxy penetrating sealer, aluminum epoxy mastic and aliphatic urethane;
  • A three-coat system of aluminum epoxy mastic and waterborne latex;
  • A three-coat system of epoxy penetrating sealer, aluminum epoxy mastic and waterborne latex; and
  • A three-coat system of moisture cure urethane.

Containment according to SSPC-Guide 6 is required, as well as certifications to SSPC-QP 1, and QP 2.

Surfaces will require cleaning and preparation in accordance with standards for Solvent Cleaning (SSPC-SP 1), Hand Tool Cleaning (SSPC-SP 2), Power Tool Cleaning (SSPC-SP 3), Near-White Metal Blast Cleaning (SSPC-SP 10/NACE No. 2), Commercial Grade Power Tool Cleaning (SSPC-SP 15), Brush-Off Blast Cleaning of Coated and Uncoated Galvanized Steel, Stainless Steels, Non-Ferrous Metals (SSPC-SP 16) and Light Waterjet Cleaning of Metals (SSPC-SP WJ-4).

The contractor also plans to follow regulations for SSPC-AB 1, AB 2 and AB 3.

The owner-approved manufacturers for this project reportedly include Carboline and Sherwin-Williams.
