INDOT Awards Bridge Painting, Rehab Contract

The Indiana Department of Transportation has awarded a $12,260,813 contract to F. H. Paschen, S.N. Nielsen & Associates LLC of Chicago for painting and rehabilitation to multiple bridge structures along Route 912 in Lake County, Indiana.

F. H. Paschen, S.N. Nielsen & Associates was the lowest of three apparent bidders. Additional bids included Superior Construction Company Inc. of Portage, Indiana, in the amount of $13,769,364.22; and Rieth Riley Construction of Goshen, Indiana, in the amount of $14,264,108.90.

The project involves cleaning and painting existing steel bridge structures. The contractor will also oversee replacement and sealing of 12,264 square yards of concrete bridge overlay, and containment and disposal of hazardous waste.

Surfaces will require preparation by high-pressure water jetting. Structural steel will receive a three-coat painting system, consisting of a zinc primer, an epoxy intermediate and a polyurethane finish.

Containment according to SSPC-Guide 6 is required, including Class 3 for zinc-primed existing systems and Class 2 for lead-primed existing systems. SSPC-QP 1, QP 2, and QP 3 certifications are required.

Owner-approved manufacturers include Carboline, International Paint, PPG Paints and Sherwin-Williams.
