Bidding Open for Veterans Memorial Bridge Repair Project

The West Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking contractors to perform rehabilitation of the Weirton-Steubenville (Veterans Memorial) Bridge between Weirton, West Virginia, and Steubenville, Ohio.

Bids are due Oct. 19.

Scope of Work

The selected contractor will oversee rehabilitation of the Weirton-Steubenville Bridge carrying US 22 between West Virginia and Ohio. At the time of the bridge’s construction, the Veterans Memorial bridge was part West Virginia’s most expensive expressway, totaling more than $125,000,000 for construction of the bridge and 4.5 miles of roadway.

The West Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking contractors to perform rehabilitation of the Weirton-Steubenville (Veterans Memorial) Bridge between Weirton, WV, and Steubenville, Ohio.

Work will include three phases of bridge cleaning. Phase one will consist of cleaning by dry methods. Phase two will include low-pressure washing with plain water of the entire bridge deck, curbs, parapets, sidewalks and expansion joints. Phase three will include a mixture of low-pressure water and a solution of commercial brand soluble water remover. Washing equipment will have a minimum pressure of 3,000 psi and a maximum pressure of 4,500 psi. The contractor will be responsible for chlorine contamination testing follow bridge cleaning.

The project will also include cleaning and painting existing structural steel bridge members, including 100% of the girders, stringers, diaphragms, floor beams, upper and lower chord members, drains and bearing devices. The steel will require abrasive blast-cleaning to Near White (SSPC-SP 10/NACE No. 2) or to a Commercial finish (SSPC-SP 6/NACE No. 3), and coating with a three-coat organic zinc-rich system. The contractor will also see 72,534 square feet of concrete protective coating application.

Containment and disposal of spent materials is required. Certification to SSPC-QP 1 and QP 2 are also required.
