The City of Chicago is seeking contractors to perform structural repairs on the Grand Avenue Bascule Bridge and Viaduct in Chicago, Illinois.

Bids are due Dec. 22(This project's original bid date was Nov. 7).

Scope of Work

Contractors are urged to bid on an upcoming project for structural repairs of the Grand Avenue Bascule Bridge and Viaduct. General construction will include removal of the existing concrete bridge deck, high strength high performance concrete superstructure installation, and structural steel repair.

The City of Chicago is seeking contractors to perform structural repairs on the Grand Avenue Bascule Bridge and Viaduct in Chicago, Illinois.

The project involves cleaning and painting existing steel structures. Primary connections will require Commercial Grade Power Tool Cleaning (SSPC-SP 15) using vacuum shrouded power tools equipped with HEPA filtration. An option to vacuum blast-clean to Commercial Blast standards (SSPC-SP 6) may be substituted.

Secondary connections will be Power Tool-cleaned according to the SSPC-SP 3 standard. An option for vacuum blast-cleaning according to Commercial standards (SSPC-SP 6), or Commercial Grade Power Tool Cleaning (SSPC-SP 15) may be substituted.

Steel members will require coating according to Illinois Department of Transportation standard specifications. Structures will receive either the standard inorganic zinc-rich waterborne acrylic paint system or an organic zinc-rich primer, epoxy intermediate, and urethane topcoat system. The owner-approved coating manufacturers include Carboline and Sherwin-Williams.

The project includes hydro-scarifying of the existing bridge deck and laying new high-performance concrete followed by 244 square yards of latex concrete overlay for new bridge deck members. The system will be constructed of a 2 ¼ inch-thick overlay on the east fixed pans (Span 1 and 2).

Existing coatings contain lead. Containment and disposal of lead paint cleaning residues is required.
