West Virginia Department of Transportation

The West Virginia Department of Transportation awarded a $298,208.40 contract for painting of the Tyler City Bridge to Legend Painting, Inc. (Campbell, Ohio) on March 24.

The awarded contractor will oversee cleaning and coating of bridge members. Bridge surfaces will require three phases of cleaning including a dry pre-washing cleaning, a two-phase water cleaning, and a final low-pressure water cleaning. Structural steel members will then require abrasive blast-cleaning to Near White standards (SSPC-SP 10), Brush-Off Blast-Cleaning standards (SSPC-SP 7) or to a Commercial finish (SSPC-SP 6/SSPC Vis 1).

Steel members will then be coated with the standard three-coat epoxy-mastic paint system. A prime coat will be applied to all surfaces of existing steel and unpainted surfaces of new steel. An intermediate coat will be applied to all steel surfaces except for galvanized surfaces and will require a tinting of black paste. The top coat will receive an epoxy mastic aluminum coating.

Exposed surfaces of bridge parapets, wingwalls, headwalls and vertical edges of the bridge deck will be given a Class 2 rubbed finish, or a Class 1 ordinary surface finish supplemented with wood float rubbing.

Certification to SSPC-QP 1 and QP 2 is required.
