New York State Department of Transportation

The New York State Department of Transportation is seeking contractors to bid on painting and repairs of the Robert Moses Causeway Bridge over the Fire Island Inlet in Albany, New York.

Contractors will oversee steel coating with either a zinc-rich primer, an epoxy intermediate and a urethane finish, or a three-coat moisture-cured urethane system. These systems are subject to change according to project requirements. The owner-approved manufacturers are Carboline, ICI Devoe, International Paint, PPG and Sherwin-Williams.

The structural steel of the bridge above deck will be completely coated. All faying surfaces need not be painted unless the coating system is identified as being Slip-B Approved on the Department’s approved list. Painted slip critical connection surfaces will receive a primer only. There is a total of 141,000 square feet of painted structural steel on this bridge and a total of 6,980 square feet of painted structural steel required for steel repairs.

Lead-containing paints have been assumed present throughout this bridge structure. The contractor is responsible for performing all work involving impact to any painted surface in compliance with all local, state and federal regulations. Disposal of hazardous paint waste containing lead is also required.

Certifications for SSPC-QP 1, QP 2 and QP 3 are required.
