WV Bridge Reno Contract Awarded

The West Virginia Department of Transportation has awarded a contract in the amount of $6,406,863.71 to Kokosing Construction Company, of Fredericktown, Ohio, for the structural rehabilitation of the Old Hi Carpenter Bridge, located in Pleasants County, West Virginia

Bids were due Sept. 18. The award was made Sept. 24.

The project includes replacement of the truss portion of the Old Hi Carpenter Bridge with a three-span continuous curved steel plate girder bridge.

Kokosing Construction Company was the lowest of six bidders. Additional bidders included:

  • Ruhlin Company, of Sharon Center, Ohio, in the amount of $7,233,220.05;
  • Clearwater Construction Inc., of Mercer, Pennsylvania, in the amount $7,383,661.30;
  • Brayman Construction Corporation, of Saxonburg, Pennsylvania, in the amount of $7,760,000;
  • Orders Construction Company Inc., of St. Alban, West Virginia, in the amount of $8,093,490.10; and
  • PCL Civil Constructors Inc., of Tampa, Florida, in the amount of $8,268,120.17.

Scope of Work

The project includes replacement of the truss portion of the Old Hi Carpenter Bridge with a three-span continuous curved steel plate girder bridge. This will comprise the replacement of the existing deck with a concrete deck, the replacement of stringers and risers, and the strengthening of floor beams. The project will entail the installation of steel barriers with a pedestrian railing and a new approach connection.

The project also includes a lump-sum item for cleaning and coating the existing steel bridge, and an additional lump-sum item for cleaning bridge structures. Exposed reinforcing steel will be abrasive blast-cleaned to Commercial (SSPC-SP 6) standards or Near White (SSPC-SP 10) standards. Galvanized steel surfaces will require solvent cleaning. Steel will be coated with a three-coat organic zinc-rich system. This system is subject to change according to project requirements. The owner-approved manufacturers are PPG, Carboline, International Paint, Sherwin-Williams and Wasser.

The contractor will oversee 12,376 square feet of protective coating application on concrete. The owner-approved manufacturers are Sherwin-Williams, Tamms Industries and Textured Coatings of America.

Containment and disposal are required.

Certification for SSPC-QP 1 and SSPC-QP 2 are required.
