$28M Phase 2 of Ponchartrain Project Awarded

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development has awarded a project in the amount of $28,360,002 to American Bridge Company, of Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, for phase two of the rehabilitation of Lake Pontchartrain Bridge, located in Orleans County, Louisiana.

Phase two of the rehabilitation of the Lake Ponchartrain Causeway will include cleaning and recoating the north and south bascule spans.

American Bridge Company was the lowest of four bidders. Additional bidders included:

  • PCL Civil Constructors Inc., of Raleigh, North Carolina, in the amount of $29,734,267;
  • Johnson Brothers Corp., A Southland Co., of Roanoke, Texas, in the amount of $30,027,774; and
  • C.E.C. Inc., of LaFayette, Louisiana, in the amount of $35,970,480.

The project bid April 11.

Scope of Work

The awarded contractor will oversee phase two rehabilitation, including cleaning and coating, on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. The parallel bridge structure spans 24 miles and is the longest over-water bridge in the world. The bridge first opened to the public in 1956 and is composed of pre-stressed panels supported by over 9,000 concrete pilings.

The contractor will perform cleaning and coating of existing steel on the north and south bascule spans. Steel will require abrasive blast-cleaning to Near White (SSPC-SP 10) or power-tool cleaning to Bare Metal (SSPC-SP 11) and coating with an inorganic zinc system. Owner-approved manufacturers include Amteco, Carboline, ICI Devoe, PPG, Rust-Oleum, Superior Products International and Sherwin-Williams.

The project will require 812 square feet of class 2 rubbed concrete finish application and 8,507 square feet of class 2 special concrete finish application. Owner-approved special concrete finish manufacturers include BASF, Euclid, Sto Corp, Textured Coatings of America, Sherwin-Williams and Vexcon.

SSPC-QP 1 and SSPC-QP 2 certifications are required.

Phase one of the project will be performed by L & A Contracting Co. of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and is anticipated to be completed in the spring of 2021.
